Limousin Cross Calves Tops for the Trade

Limousin cross calves took out the two top places in the Albany Show Society Commercial Cattle Competition for Calves most Suitable to the Trade. Sixteen entries of four cows and calves from the Albany district were judged by Simmental breeder and lot feeder Will McGowan.

The winning group entered by Max Auld of Napier were sired by Limousin bulls from Simmental cross cows. The second placed group were three quarter Limousin calves from Limousin cross cows and entered by Max Shahun also from Napier.

This competition in one of the prime beef cattle areas in WA demonstrated the suitability of three quarter European bred cattle for the domestic market in WA.

Outstanding Over Hooks Prices for Limousins

Two outstanding sales of pure Limousin cattle have been reported by happy vendors from opposite endsof Australia.

John and Glenda Tomlinson from Many Peaks in south east Western Australia sold twenty five 18 month old Limousin steers and heifers over the hooks to E.G. Green and Sons for $3.00 kg carcase weight. The steers and heifers averaged 291.4 kg dressed weight for a price of $874.

All cattle in the consignment received an additional $5.00 per head Cattle Care incentive payment from E.G. Green and Sons.

Montrose Partnership from Gunnedah in central NSW were very pleased with the prices they received for a consignment of 37 steers, cows and bulls sent to Australia Meat Holdings at Dinmore, Qld.

Eighteen pure Limousin milk and two tooth steers averaged 350 kg dressed weight and at $2.74 kg returned an average of $960. Eight of the steers made over $1,000 with the top steer at $1,089.

Fifteen cull cows averaged 333.3 kg carcase weightand at $2.65 per kg came back at $883. Three of these cows made over $1,000 with a top price of $1,064.

Four young milk and two tooth bulls weighed 392 kg and at $2.57 per kg averaged $1,008.

Limousin Breed Society General Manager Alex McDonald said that all cattle in these consignments had adequate fat depth demonstrating the potential of pure Limousin cattle to meet current market specifications. The lower fat levels of cull Limousin cows is a big bonus because it generally avoids discounts for over-fatness. Only one cow in the Tomlinson consignment was discounted for being over-fat.

"All of the cattle were finished on grass demonstrating the doing ability of the Limousin breed", he said.

Limousin Cross Cattle Shine in RNA Prime Cattle Competition

A Limousin X Hereford steer was the Champion Single Steer and Limousin X Angus steers were the Champion Pen of Three at this year's Brisbane RNA Prime Cattle Show.

The Champion Single Steer was exhibited by John and Leny Gaffney of Bell, Qld. The 693 kg milk tooth steer took out the heavyweight individual prize and the overall single championship.

The giant 18 month old steer was bred by Glendale Pastoral Co, Bell and was spotted by Mr Gaffney while contract mustering on the property earlier this year. This steer later sold to Australia Meat Holdings for 220c/kg or $1,463.

The winning pen of three were shown by Glen and Kathleen Franz trading as Darr Creek Pastoral Co.

Glen Franz spotted the steers at sale at Chinchilla in April and believed they would fit the bill for the pen of three trade cattle competition in Brisbane.

The purchase paid off when the line averaging 500 kg won the class for steers or heifer weighing 401-500 kg (suitable for the supermarket, hotel and restaurant trade) and was then judged Champion Pen of Three.

The steers later sold to Tees Bros for 188 c/kg or $940.
